According to Wenner the magazine's name was inspired by Muddy Waters's 1950 song "Rolling Stone" & Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone".

The band also took their nam-ad hoc according to legend-from the title of Water's recording of "Rolling Stone".

"Stole"? I dunno.

The Stones (& The Beatles) have always been pretty open about the degree to which they were influenced by US bluesmen like Waters, James Brown, Howlin' Wolf, etc & rockers like Little Richard & Chuck Berry. These guys in turn had their own influences. They didn't create their music out of whole cloth. And if you say white musicians shouldn't be influenced by black or Latino or Native performers you shut the door on the evolution of culture.

Just a few days ago Keith Richards told Howard Stern that he & Mick were absolutely influenced by US R&B performers & that is all he listens to to this day.
