Antislavery legislation was exactly what the south feared & prompted secession, which was really what sparked the conflict. The US Civil War was a war of secession, exactly like the War of Independence (only the south, of course, never developed allies in Europe).

I'm told slavery in the Empire had become economically unfeasible by the time it was banned by legislation.
