Are any of your white friends who would choose death before enslavement Jewish? Because we remember & memorialize our time as slaves in Egypt, liberated not by our own swords but God's lethal visit to Egyptian first-borns.

Also, I think many, (though by no means all) people of European descent know enough history to recall that Gauls, Goths, Picts, etc, were captured & enslaved by Romans as their empire expanded.
