Britain did not sweep Arab Palestinians away. And "war guilt" for what? Fighting & defeating Hitler? Militant Jews were viewed as "ungrateful" by Whitehall, which sought good relations with the emerging Arab states. Jews were told to go home, back to the countries where their homes were taken by their erstwhile neighbors, or remain, stateless, in DP camps.

While the British did arm some Jews before the war, the Haganah & Night Squads, after the war it was a different story. It was Stalin who provided the first caches of military arms to the Haganah/IDF. The British simply washed their hands of the whole project.
