Sorry. This seems nihilistic. No government could possibly react to the Oct 7 outrages by simply standing pat & decrying its own past behavior as some sort of logical provocation. This essay, despite the author's obvious deep knowledge of the subject & players, suggests that Biden & Netanyahu woke up on 8 Oct with a yen to pound Gaza for no particular reason. It isn't madness to punish & destabilize Hamas. The issue is how. And to what degree will innocent civilians continue to suffer. That is always the problem with asymetric conflicts.
