Doesn't your final point put the perfect against the good? One can still fight for equality while living under the British Crown or Japanese Emperor. Great Britain, with it's genetic head of state, still managed to abolish slavery before the US with its elected HoS.

Incidentally, while I have no skin in the game, it's hard as hell to imagine the UK having a president, or premier or whatever ... though I expect the day will come.
