Everyone's getting on this guy's case—not just here but in comments attached to news articles—but he is, from what I gather, a physician with a military background & has spent time in the Ukraine (no mention whether he speaks the local vernacular, but seems possible). Those three facts (which are absent from this article) might not change people's minds about the wisdom of him going, but certainly they mitigate the "dude is crazy!!!" outlook.

Then, when people say: Hey, he's in Detroit! Why doesn't he help there? I dunno. Doesn't that beg the question by assuming he doesn't do good work locally? Further, isn't that argument dangerously similar to the right wing complaint that BLM or similar civil rights org should focus on neighborhood crime, or poverty, or shoring up families, etc. rather than police violence?

Finally, from what I can gather, it's Polish & other neighboring border authorities that are discriminating against black refugees. Not so much Ukrainians. That said, I always believed the Ukraine was extremely antisemitic. During WWII Jewish villagers asked invading Wehrmacht for protection against fascist militias formed by their own countrymen! More recently, actress Mila Kunis's family came here from the Ukraine to escape antisemitism.

But then I reflect they have a Jewish head of state. Only nation aside from Israel ... so, who knows?
