Great piece. I can only try to imagine how disconcerting that reaction to the PM must have been. Around the time of Rabin's government & assassination I was active on a Usenet discussion forum, soc.culture.jewish.moderated. We had users from all over the world, but mainly the US & Israel. It troubled me then & still does the degree of vituperation those on the right (& not necessarily far right) heaped on Israel's founders, from Ben-Gurion to Rabin to Sharon (many expressed hope that after being incapacitated by a stroke he was suffering greatly) ... the last because of his withdrawal from Gaza. What does it portend for the health of a nation when its founders are vituperated far, far beyond legitimate criticism as wicked, worthless men?

Then there are all of the "grassy knoll" conspiracy theories that swirl around Rabin's assassination. Just now I started to read summaries to remind myself (they were all over scjm at the time), I stopped when the author pointed out that the alleged absence of gun powder residue on Yoga Amir's hands proves he was firing blanks....

Really...?

And these are, some, otherwise intelligent people, so driven by ideology. Sad.
