How were you wrong & why do you owe an apology simply for requesting better documentation of an outrageous accusation that, sadly, proved to be correct? At what point did you claim it was false?

I think you were dead right to hold fire until the accusation was proven correct post-investigation.

Now, why you would have blocked your interlocutor seems like a bit of a mystery: perhaps there was more going on?
