I agree with much of what you have to say here, but Zionism per se is a secular movement, & seeks to avoid reverting to a Halachic (i.e. Jewish Law) state, which would entail rebuilding the Temple & resuming sacrifices. That's why Dayan gave control of the Temple Mount to the Waqf after the Six Day War. The idea was to avoid conflict over possibly building a Third Temple were it in Jewish hands.

And yes, many Torah observant Jews believe the current state is idolatry & forbidden to them until Mosiach comes. He will rebuild the Temple & set things right.
