I remember the Armero tragedy & Omayra Sanchez's slow, heart-breaking death. We are so arrogant, yet often helpless when events such as these happen.

As a (mostly retired) press photographer myself I try to imagine being there, what on earth would I say to Omayra? "Just a little longer, now. And you'll be free?"

She had to know it was bullshit. I think making that shot must have been at least as traumatizing as Carter's photo of the dying African girl.
