I think anyone who recalls the ghastly evacuation of a mere 5,000 Jewish settlers from Gaza in '05 knows that evacuating settlers from the West Bank is impossible. Many of the illegal settlements in particular were religious Zionists. Some spoke darkly of another "Hanukkah" (i.e. Jewish civil war) should the state attempt to forcibly remove them. And they're well armed.

I think the only way a two-state solution is even remotely viable would be for Israel to withdraw from the West Bank entirely. Offer settlers a year either to repatriate or become Palestinian citizens. Can they risk that such would be tolerated by the Arab majority? Probably not. So they're hostages to continued Israeli occupation.

So, in other words, ethnic cleansing is probably the only way forward for Israel, international consequences be damned.
