I think we do balance our faith with the needs of society. It's a rabbinic commandment that Jews should always follow the laws of whatever nation we inhabit. Those whose faith is more fundamental, such as the Hasidim, generally live in communities separated from the wider society. In western society, by & large, the greater danger to Jewish continuity has always been assimilation, not pogroms.

Take for example the LDS. The mainstream church was forced to compromise on polygamy, but radical Mormons still practice it, officially sub rosa, but everyone knows who they are & they're not usually bothered by the authorities.

If they (i.e. the other 98%) didn't go after us for Bernie Madoff or Jonathan Pollard I don't think they will for Spielberg or Cohen.
