Interesting piece. I've been trying to write something tying Israel's founding, the question of whether Zionism is still relevant, & the current events in Gaza, only to find the more I learn, the more I need to change course. The history is complex.

Zionism is done. Israel is there, a nuclear power. The Jews aren't going anywhere. The question now is how to relate to those Arabs & their descendants who once inhabited the place where Israel is now. Call them whatever you like, & cite whomever you like. Sure, some call for "the river to the sea!", others just want the bombs to stop falling. There are certainly Latinos in my hometown (LA) who believe they can return Cali to Mexico. The "reconquest". Yeah, dream on. They don't represent mainstream Latino thought, yet they're handy when Trumpers want to prompt xenophobia.

As has been pointed out, Israel squandered global sympathy & solidarity months ago. Everyone knows damned well that Bibi's a crook, a fascist & incompetent, so why's he still in office & why are the bombs still falling? Debating Palestinian identity at this point is rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic (to cite a grossly overused analogy...). As a Zionist myself I greatly fear the degree to which Israel is destroying what Rashid Khalidi called its greatest asset, its standing in the world. Because you can find some who call out Jews as Jews doesn't mean everyone is. Many are just calling for decency & restraint here.
