Loved the review. I haven't seen the film yet, but I did read the book whence it derived. I was curious about the scene, in the trailer, where Marguerite corrects Jean that he's not so much risking his life on her behalf, but risking hers on his behalf. That didn't quite make sense, because in Eric Jager's account it's a difficult case to prove. Le Gris appears on the one day Marguerite is alone, & he's otherwise alibied.
In short, the only way Marguerite can get justice is for Jean to engage in trial by combat. Obviously Jean feels as though the transgression is against him. He's no proto-feminist anti-rape activist. But I don't see how Marguerite's reply makes any sense unless the screenplay makes substantial changes.
Anyway, still quite looking forward to the film. Thanks for the review.
