I had a perfectly ordinary public school education in the 60s & early 70s. That many framers including Washington & Jefferson were slave owners, & that this contradicted the sentiment of the Declaration of Independence, was well known.
Jefferson & Hemmings came a bit later (& was only confirmed by more recent DNA testing). The power imbalance between slave & master does make issues of consent problematic, but even a slave may say: I would prefer not to. And given Hemmings's subsequent fertility, I doubt it became sexual before her 18th birthday.
We don't worship their words. If we did the US Constitution would never have been amended.
