Not really certain what your central thesis is here, but I appreciate reference to the underlying conflict between religious & secular Israelis. I recall some of the former insisting that Dayan returned control of the Temple Mount to the waqf out of niaivte, when in reality he foresaw the impulse of religious Jews to rebuild the Temple & establish a Halachic state, undermining the foundation of modern, secular Israel. Best to keep it out of Jewish hands altogether.
Some claim—& they might not be wrong—that Israel maintains tension with the Palestinians to avoid, or at least postpone, the inevitable civil strife between religious & secular over Israel's future.
