Oh indeed, he was a consummate politician. No doubt. I think, beyond abolition, secession either by war or simply letting the south go would have led to anarchy on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line. I don't see either a Confederacy or truncated Union remaining whole. Not without force. Why would they? So that also, in my opinion, justified the carnage.
