Spot on analysis of the film's themes. It's definitely a favorite of mine, but I recall how poorly it was received in '90 by critics, esp the LA Weekly. I chatted with a fellow who worked in the industry & had been at the industry premiere. He told me the film had been met with dead silence as the credits rolled. An exaggeration? Probably. But it certainly took a while to catch on.
