Thanks for reading & taking the time to comment, Rebecca. To be clear, I'm not endorsing Soviet policy, but merely pointing out that the USSR's endorsement of partition played a key role in passing the resolution, to everyone's utter surprise.

Stalin, of course, also authorized the first sale of military grade arms by way of Czechoslovakia to the Israelis, without which it's doubtful they would have won the war.

The motives for both actions, as far as I know, remain unclear to this day.
