That is not an accurate account of the St. Louis. While passengers embarking from Hamburg did seek to escape growing German anti-Semitic laws & action WWII had not yet erupted & the Holocaust was not yet underway. In spite of being denied permission to disembark in Cuba or Canada, all of the passengers on the St Louis eventually reached the (sadly temporary in some cases) safety of Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands & France. It's true that many were eventually murdered after Germany overran three of those countries, but at the time of disembarkation no one foresaw such a tragic denouement.
