The problem with comparisons to Palestine pre-aliyah is that Jews were a small, insignificant minority, rarely seen & never heard from. All were governed by an empire from afar. So a return to anything remotely similar seems unrealistic.
And you're right, they are still resisting, their numbers have grown. By "lost" I think I was referring to the Iron Wall argument of many right wing Zionists who insist per Jabotinsky that the Arabs must be convinced they were never defeat Israel by force of arms, & only then would they be ready to make a lasting peaces. Problem he didn't take into account is that any Arab is not all Arabs & Palestinians wouldn't be content to relocate to any other Arab state—even should the latter agree. Many on the far right are still operating on that assumption, which the Palestinian movement has clearly demonstrated to be erroneous & destructive to all parties.
