This does not frighten me in the least. I've been aware of Lincoln's ongoing preference for colonization. Maybe it was wrong. But, I have to ask this: How can you argue in one breath that racism in entwined in the "DNA" of this country, while denouncing Lincoln for proposing colonization?

He might have wondered: In the recent history of the world, has there ever been an example of a people, ethnically distinct, who endured centuries of chattel slavery, only to be freed & then successfully integrated into the society that enslaved them?

I'm hard-pressed to think of an example.

Also you claim if Lincoln had lived there would be few black folk in the US. If that is so, why he did endorse Gen Sherman's Special Order #15 which set aside good land in South Carolina & Florida for freemen, to own (which, thanks to Booth, Johnson later rescinded)?

There is no indication that Lincoln intended to compel any free men or women to emigrate or colonize.

When Sherman & Stanton met with a delegation of freemen, they suggested two necessities: land & separation from whites.

I note in response to another Medium essay, you wrote that Lincoln deserved no credit for passage of the 15th amendment because he died prior to its passing. That's just wrong. By the time he was murdered passage of the amendment was a fait accompli, largely through his efforts pushing it through the House.

I get people are tired of the "white savior" motif. It's been shoved down everyone's throat for nigh upon two centuries now. But in defaming Lincoln you're joining with Neo-Confederates who have been making the same arguments for years now because for them the Civil War can never have anything to do with slavery.

Bottom line, for Lincoln: Nothing, nothing positive happens for enslaved black people unless the Union remains whole. Few other potential leaders of the day had the will to go to war & endure four bloody years to keep it whole & prevent a slave empire from forming & expanding in the south.
