When I was a kid they showed Wizard once a year on TV, usually around Xmas time. That then was the only way, aside from theater revivals, to see it. Because we had a black & white TV I never realized the first part was shot in sepia-toned black & white while the middle is Technicolor. It was all b&w for us, lol!
Loved how cleverly they shoot the cabin's interior in low light so it appear still to be monochrome just before Dorothy opens the door. Imagine how audiences in '39 must have had their minds blown when all of that vibrant color is suddenly revealed.
Incidentally, my mother, born in '24, was 15 or 16, Dorothy's age, & her name was Dorothy. So I think the movie must have been pretty special for her, too.
