Very glad you brought Ike's speech back to the fore for Medium readers (which results in a segue to Butler's "War Is A Racket" also important). Many on the right dismissed it as the lingering effects of the health issues—possible stroke, atrial fibrillation, hypotension, etc—Ike had begun to experience with greater frequency.

The speech is a crucial document in US presidential history ... yet it was virtually ignored. JFK, after all, ran on the alleged "missile gap" with the USSR, demanding increased deterrence & military spending.

I don't dismiss wider involvement in the assassinations as mere conspiracy fluff, but I'm not there with the idea that JFK would turn away from Vietnam. After all, LBJ said basically the same things about wider US involvement, then did the opposite. So, who knows?
