Very well written, & absolutely heartbreaking. I've read of other infants/toddlers who have starved to death because of neglect. In nearly every instance there was a miscommunication—the caregiver thought the child was being tended to, or an accident where a solo caregiver is injured or killed & no one realized there was a child to look after.
But this case beggars imagination. She left the child on a regular basis & planned to do in the future. If poor Asiah hadn't died then I think it's likely Verphy would have found another way to do away with her.
And she'll likely have more children in the future.
