Well, you're suggesting the foundation of Israel wasn't necessary because Jews in the diaspora are safe today. But when speaking of Israel's foundation you have to take into account circumstances at the time.

In the immediate post-war era the Allies see for themselves that rumors & reports they heard are, if anything, pale before the reality of mass murder. So, what do they do? Nothing. The US continued to maintain immigration restrictions while Britain continued its White Paper limits on immigration into Palestine. Jews who returned to homes in Eastern Europe were murdered or driven off by erstwhile neighbors who didn't want to return the properties they "inherited". Antisemitism in Eastern Europe reached its apotheosis in '45 - '49 really. Witness the Kielce pogrom.

Survivors languished in DP camps, stateless, with no where to go, for years. Many would have preferred to go to the US or Canada over Palestine. But only Palestine would take them. I've always believed that more than the pre-war pogroms & the Holocaust, the immediate post-war conditions demonstrated the need for a Jewish state.

Joseph Massad made an argument similar to yours in an Al Jazeera essay, but antisemitism didn't just out like someone flipping a switch. Many survivors believed a second holocaust in Eastern Europe was pending. Silly? I don't know.

I don't know exactly what's going on wrt Hamas right now. But, a smart reaction to 7 Oct would have been to continue with the Abraham Accords while going after Hamas's leadership the way they did Black September in the early 70s. But this was Netanyahu. They knew that. It wasn't going to be smart, it provided the pretext Likud has been aching for to eliminate Palestinian presence in Gaza. They had to see that coming. Same with the West Bank. Government claims it's cracking down on settler abuse of Palestinians, but that's BS. They're looking for a pretext to drive Palestinians out of the West Bank & East Jerusalem—witness the take over of Sheik Jarrah.

This has become a complete betrayal of Zionism; an act of desperation transformed into a criminal enterprise that can't possibly sustain in the long term.
