What did William Goldman write in his Adventures in the Screen Trade? "Everyone [in Hollywood] is terrified" & "no one knows anything [as to what will work or not]"?
I couldn't believe, for example, that The Taking of Pelham 123 was actually remade with Travolta to a film no one actually saw. Then there was Ben Hur. Remember that? No one else does, either. Total Recall, The Fog, Around The World in 80 Days, The Haunting [poor Lily Taylor deserved much better], The Wicker Man [mercy!] & so many others inhabit places of honor on the list of incomprehensible remakes.
There are some that stand well alongside the originals, such as Zach Snyder's Dawn of the Dead, or 3:10 To Yuma. But they are few & far in-between.
