When McEnroe got into trouble by claiming Serena wasn't the greatest tennis player ever because she would rank "600th" on the men's tour (more like 300th, but let's don't quibble), he should have instead asked the interviewer to define what was meant by "greatness" in this context. Certainly Serena is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, ranking notwithstanding.
Campion's remark baffled because it compares apples to oranges. There's no reason a woman director can't make films that are critically & commercially more successful than a male director using similar subject matter. Plus, I hadn't realized Campion's family was also in the biz. So that adds insult to injury.
Honestly I hadn't seen the racial component in her remarks. Just its utter gaucheness. But maybe you're right here.
