You really have to ask this question?
For me, it wasn't even the vast pogroms of the late 19th century, or the Holocaust. Witness how, with the war over, & the Allies viewing firsthand that all of the horror stories, reports & rumors were not only true, they minimized the scale of those atrocities.
And what do they do?
Britain's the White Paper limits, intercepting Jews trying to get to Palestine; the US keeps its immigration quotas. One would think they'd see a need to find someplace of refuge for survivors rather than advise they return home, where erstwhile neighbors drove many away & murdered some to avoid giving their property back; or put them into DP camps, where some remained more than five years after the war's end.
Of course, they're not to blame. Their strategic interests lay in maintaining sources of petroleum. Britain sought to maintain its ME hegemony while the US & USSR looked to cut in. You don't do that by pissing off the Arabs.
But what about Jewish interests? Who's looking out for them? Only a nation can really do that.
And a binational nation is just demanding they become yet another minority.
Oh, & incidentally, Israel didn't invade the Palestinian "nation" on the West Bank in '67. That was Jordanian land, annexed in the 50s. Jordanians never sought to create a Palestinian state, & who could blame them? A Palestinian, after all, assassinated their first king, Abdullah I.
